Classes, Art Talk, Book Events

Sat., Sept. 2 – Jewelry Making – Beginning Metal Etching, from 1:30p-4:30p;  $60 + $15 supplies.  Artisan Jan Kellogg will teach how to etch on metal and how to use grinding and polishing equipment, and to apply patina to a metal bracelet.  Students will go home with a beautiful copper cuff bracelet that anyone would be proud to wear or gift.

      

 

Tuesday, Sept. 12 – Jewelry Making – Beginning Wirework, 6p-8p;  $40.  Jan Kellogg will teach students to design and construct a bracelet and a pair of earrings using the basic wire working techniques  This is a beginning class.

 

 

 

 

 

Art Talk – Sculpture & Enneagram – Tues, September 19th 5 – 7:00pm with talk starting at 6:00pm:  A conversation with sculptor Annick Ibsen and Enneagram teacher Adele Ver Steeg.   Ibsen will showcase 9 sculptures that interpret a series of personalities, based on a system called the Enneagram. The Enneagram, an old personality analysis system, states that most people fall under certain personalities.  Adele Ver Steeg, Enneagram teacher, will be in conversation with Annick about the crossroads of art and the personalities represented at the Gallery.  This is a free event – wine and cheese will be served.

Sat., Sept. 23 – UP Cycling Clothing 101, on September 23rd & October 14th, 1p-3:30p;  $35 class fee.  Ready to give UP cycling a try?  Join fabric artist Janet Bergeron for a make and take class to UP cycle one of your shirts or tops.

Monday, Sep 25th 6:30 – 8:00pm:  Des Moines Writers’ Workshop to Host Writers’ Panel.   FREE event!

The Des Moines Writers’ Workshop (DMWW) will host a writers’ panel at 6:30 PM on Monday, September 25 at Artisan Gallery 218 featuring six authors at different stages in their careers. The authors [Beth Burgmeyer, Matt Snyder, Rachel Eliason, Francis Sparks, Michael Witt, and Kay Fenton Smith] will read from both published books and works in progress.   Following the presentation, enjoy a reception courtesy of the Des Moines Writers’ Workshop.  Read more

Valley Junction Events

Valley Junction’s Farmer’s Market continues through September on Thursday evenings.  Come and enjoy food and music and stop by the Gallery.

Fall Antique Jamboree Sept 10th 8 – 4:00pm.  The Antique Jamboree is one of the largest outdoor antique shows in the Midwest. FREE admission and parking to the public. There will be Vintage Tractors on site from 9-3.

Artist News

John Evans– John Evans is in a show at Salisbury House through September, by invitation. The 15 artists participating in this exhibit have been asked to provide literary references that relate to their piece of art in a meaningful way. The exhibit will be accessible as part of regular paid tours of Salisbury House through October 15, 2017.

 

Elizabeth Rhoads Read –  Elizabeth is displaying her art at a number of galleries in September and October in Iowa  [CSPS Commons Gallery, Sept.7 – Oct 1;  Black Earth Gallery; and Aug. 29 – Oct.9 at the Polk County Heritage Gallery.  She also has works in Mt. Vernon for the Lincoln Highway Art Festival on Sept. 16th.

 

Denice Peters – Denice will have three paintings in the Tim Murphy Gallery Mid-American Pastel Society show this fall near Kansas City, MO.

 

 

Tom Whalley – Tom received several blue and red ribbons at the Iowa State Fair, including a blue ribbon for sculpture in the Fine Arts Show.  This show is the largest juried art show in Iowa.

Victoria Herring – Victoria had an image, Abstract Lily Pads, selected as one of  15 finalists for the inauguration of the City of Ames’s new Water Plant.

Holiday hours start October lst.   We will be open Mondays  11 – 4, Tues – Fri 10 – 5:30,  Sat 10 – 5 and by appointment.

Friday October 6th, 5p-9p – Gallery Night in Valley Junction.  Come experience our newest exhibit ‘Deep Water’.

10/26 Sip and Shop:  The Historic Valley Junction Foundation hosts ‘Sip & Shop” on 10/26, 11/2 & 11/9.  This year the theme is “Girls Night Out” and we will have special events such as a ‘Women and the Land’ book signing, Jewelry Stamping Open Studio, and Fashion Show/Scarf Tying demonstrations!   We will donate 5% of our gross sales on these nights to ARL of Iowa!  Details to come soon!.

As you plan your charitable gifting and donations before year end, please consider us! Artisan Gallery 218 can receive tax-deductible donations as a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts and services organization.  ALL donations go toward operating expenses of the gallery and support the local art community by allowing us to continue to feature and support Iowa artists!

Donations may be made by check or on our website by credit card in support of our.  Checks should be made out to Fractured Atlas.
